CHAPTER 14

“Rise and shine!” Zelda bellowed. “I brought you a caramel Frappuccino!”

Without warning Zelda threw back the curtains, blinding wedges of sunlight pierced into my dark bedroom and thrust me from the deep throes of sleep.

“It burns, it burns!” I moaned melodramatically while throwing the covers back over my head.

“Ah you’ll be fine.” Zelda trudged over to the bed and threw the covers back. In a last ditch attempt I covered my head with the pillows until she threw these off too.

“Why are you doing this to me?” I groaned.

“Because you texted me last night to say that we were going to the library today. When I got to the bakery this morning Daphne and Rosie said you hadn’t been downstairs yet, which is highly suspicious. You normally do the morning bake with them even when you’re not on the schedule. Then I rang the apartment door and there was no answer—I had to use my spare key to get in!”

“You have a spare key?” I said groggily.

Zelda looked at me as though it was a stupid question. “Of course, I do. I used to come here all the time and practice lines for my amateur dramatics class.”

Actually, now that I thought about it, I already knew that. The first time I ever met Zelda I had barged into the bakery because I thought she was being attacked. It turned out she was just reading lines for a play. She never actually rehearsed for these parts on account of being chronically shy, and most of her interest in the local theatre stemmed from the fact that she had a crush on one of the guys there.

“But why the military wakeup call?” I groaned again while pushing myself up into a sitting position.

She laughed. “I’d hardly call nine in the morning a military wakeup call. Besides, I would have woken you up earlier, I was here at half after eight. I saw that you were still sleeping so I decided to go out and get you a nice drink. Voila!”

Zelda put the syrup-topped coffee into my hands, and I took it gratefully. “It is much appreciated, thank you.” I took a long slurp of the sugary-sweet drink. A long yawn escaped me, and Zelda plonked herself down on the bed.

“So, are you going to tell me why you’re so tired? Late night visit from Hudson?” Her brows danced in a suggestive way, and she nudged me with her elbow.

“Full disclosure, we do not have that kind of sisterly relationship,” I said, feeling slightly nauseous just at the prospect of discussing my private life with Zelda.

She pulled back and balked at me in disgust. “Oh god, I don’t want to actually hear anything about it! Why would you put that in my head?!”

“You’re the one that brought it up, you nitwit! As it stands, I did have a late-night visitor actually. But it wasn’t Hudson.”

This time an expression of shock came over. “Zora! You’re cheating on him!?” she said in a hushed whisper.
